Feedback 101

How designers give and receive productive critiques

Do you ever look back on your old design work and cringe? It’s easy to see your mistakes after some time has passed — you’re not as immersed in the work.

If you want to get great advice without waiting a few months, the best way is getting feedback from designers you trust.

Critique is the engine of healthy design work. It’s magical — if you come up with as many ideas as you can, get good critique, your work will magically end up being much much much better.

Most junior designers avoid critique for the same reason they avoid usability testing: it’s hard to ask for someone’s time, and criticism can hurt to hear.

But critiquing well — and receiving critique well — doesn’t happen without practice.
